Review:
It’s hard to believe that Christmas is right around the corner. Although I’m not one to start counting down the days as soon as July hits, I do start to think about what Christmas gifts I want to buy for people. This book caught my eye for a friend who loves A Christmas Carol. As a fan of the book and stage play myself, of course I needed to read it, too!
While this is intended to be used as an Advent devotional, it could also be a good book to reach for as a comfort read and pick me up. Each day includes a prayer, a reflection inspired by A Christmas Carol, Bible verses, and journaling prompts if you so choose. Mixed throughout are charming illustrations, and there is a wonderful addition at the end that lists different Victorian Christmas traditions, keeping in theme with the A Christmas Carol inspiration.
I didn’t read this as a proper day-by-day devotional, but it’s something I would love to revisit again at the proper time. It was well put together and uplifting. I will absolutely be gifting this book this Christmas!
Thanks to Zondervan and NetGalley for providing a free digital ARC of the book!
Likes & Dislikes:
What I liked:
- Has a pretty layout and included illustrations.
- Explores the themes in A Christmas Carol through a spiritual lens.
- Absolutely loved the Victorian Christmas traditions list!
What I didn’t like:
- I’d definitely recommend a physical copy over digital. I think something gets lost in the formatting. (Keeping in mind that what I read was an ARC copy, although, I feel like this is still one to experience by flipping through the pages.)
Afterthoughts:
After so many spoofs and retellings of A Christmas Carol, I think it’s hard to remember that Christian themes are so prevalent in the original story.
