Review:

I’d had the chance to read the first book in this series when it came out, but I passed on it because it seemed to tread too much into romance (I like my mysteries/thrillers to be very focused on the mystery). I didn’t realize this was part of the same series, although I should have because of the stunning cover! 

Emersyn and Wyatt take on a client looking to investigate the suspicious death of her brother. Although she’s having second thoughts about her new career in detective work, Emersyn is empathetic to this woman given her own brother’s recent death. Though the death was initially ruled accidental, Emersyn and Wyatt end up finding themselves in danger as they get further into the investigation, confirming the client’s suspicions that something went amiss.

Though there was definitely romance involved, it wasn’t as prevalent as I expected (at least in this book). There was a good balance of mystery and witty humor which I always enjoy. I also loved the family dynamic between Emersyn and her niece. I’d like to go back and read the first book at some point so I can experience the full context. 

Having started the series on book two, I’ll say that it is possible to enjoy it as a standalone, however, I think knowing the backstory is important for the full enjoyment of the story.

• I feel like there needed to be more research around funeral home terminology and protocols.

Afterthoughts:

This was a great road trip read!
