Review:
Lonely and barely getting by, Serin wishes she could change her life. Living with her mother in poverty after the death of her father and her sister has run away, she feels isolated and without direction for her future. Her only hope is a ticket to the ‘Rainfall Market’.
When she is not only given a ticket to this mythical market but also chosen to receive a golden ticket, she’s sure that she’ll be able to select the perfect new life with the help of a magical cat named Issah. Each life comes with its downsides, but she’s determined to find the perfect fit.
This was a sweet story, although I struggled to keep track of the fantastical elements. The world-building felt hurried, and the storytelling was choppy. I’m not sure if that’s just something that got lost in translation or not. Fortunately, the writing captures a nice atmosphere, and the focus is more on the emotional side in general.
I agree with other reviews that say that the book feels mismarketed. It reads closer to middle grade or somewhere between middle grade and young adult. Still worth the read as an adult if you’re looking for something cozy with a hint of nostalgia.
Likes & Dislikes:
What I liked:
- Issah!! I’m a sucker for cats.
- Beautiful cover that fits with the vibe of the story.
What I didn’t like:
- Often felt rushed and choppy. I struggled to keep track of small details, and it felt like there were numerous plot holes.
Afterthoughts:
