Review:
I’m normally not drawn to YA Fantasy, but the cover of this one caught my eye at the bookstore. Outside of One Piece and Frenchman’s Creek, I’ve never ventured into pirate stories. I thought this one might be a fun read.
Alosa allows herself to be captured by brothers Riden and Draxen on a quest to find an ancient treasure map. Always one step ahead of them, she choreographs her captivity to mess with their heads, manipulating the crew and hoping not to have to use her secret weapon.
This was definitely a fun, escapist read. I probably would have eaten it up as a teenager. That said, as an adult, and it always seems to come down to this, it was uncomfortable reading about seventeen-year-olds in some provocative scenarios. It could have been tamed down and kept in line with Alosa’s character traits.
I’m unsure if I’ll continue the series or not. It was a good palate cleanser, but I’m not invested in the outcome.
Likes & Dislikes:
What I liked:
- Fun adventure plot.
- Some great quotes.
What I didn’t like:
- In these situations, I would have preferred the characters to be a few years older.
Afterthoughts:
Definitely was a good change of pace for me!
