Review:
This has been one of my most anticipated reads of 2025. For the past couple of years, I’ve gone back and forth about wanting to pick it up because I loved the cover, but I had other Christmas-themed books I’d been saving to read. After reading my first B.K. Borrison book earlier this year, I knew I didn’t want to put this off for one more December.
With her Christmas tree farm facing a financial crisis, Stella enters a contest to be featured on a popular influencer’s travel page (and most importantly, win the prize money). Wanting to make the farm sound more romantic, Stella claims that she owns the place with her boyfriend. She asks her best friend, Luca, to play the role of her boyfriend. Luca jumps at the chance, but Stella worries about what this might do to their friendship, especially given that she’s madly in love with him.
I enjoyed the plot of this book, but Stella got on my nerves. While I understand and sympathize that a lot of her decisions and thought processes are driven by past trauma/abandonment, for 300+ pages, she grew frustrating. I loved Luka, so he was a good balance, but even with this, it was hard to believe these two had a decade-long friendship. Their communication was terrible, among other nuances that I found to be missing.
I do plan on continuing the series. I’m looking forward to reading each book during the corresponding season.
Likes & Dislikes:
What I liked:
- Cute premise and a lovely setting. I felt like I was there.
- Luka and his mother!
What I didn’t like:
- Honestly, as a reader… Stella.
- The amount of spicy scenes felt gratuitous. I skip over these scenes and I felt like I lost a lot more of the book than usual. I don’t remember this being as much of an issue with First-Time Caller.
Afterthoughts:
I’m glad this wasn’t my first experience with this author, because I know that I can enjoy her books when it hits right.
