Review:

Hannah Pick-Goslar and Anne Frank’s families both escaped Germany and moved to Amsterdam before the start of World War II. The two girls became fast friends and grew up together in the country they all thought was their refuge. While we know the sad fate of Anne Frank and her life in hiding through her diary, this book tells the story of one of her close friends.

Hannah’s family was sent to the Westerbork concentration camp. Thanks to her father’s work, they had passports that made them eligible for exchange, allowing them a semblance of ‘privilege’ among the prisoners. Still, they faced starvation, disease, abuse, and death. Hannah was among the survivors of her family, and lived to reunite with her dear friend Anne when they were transferred to Bergen-Belsen

It was interesting to read Hannah’s survival story. Even apart from Anne Frank, her family’s situation offered a unique insight. Of course, it was also great to read about her friendship with Anne and gaining insight through the lens of a childhood/family friend. In terms of personality, I could relate to Hannah more than I did to Anne when I read her diary, so that was a contrast for me. I’d love to go back and read both books back-to-back sometime.

Likes & Dislikes:

What I liked:

  • Hannah seemed like such a lovely person. I admire all that she did to take care of her little sister.
  • It was so wonderful to hear about her friendship with Anne.
  • Her family’s circumstances offered a unique perspective of a Holocaust survivor.

What I didn’t like:

  • I really don’t have anything negative to say about the book.

Afterthoughts:

All in all, this was such an inspiring read, and it’s a perfect companion piece to Anne Frank’s diary.
