Review:
I had so many conflicting emotions while reading this book, but in the sense that I was engrossed in the story. I can’t remember another book off the top of my head that made me feel quite the same way while reading it.
Set in Australia after World War I, we follow the story of Tom and Isabel, who live as lighthouse keepers. Longing to start a family on lonely Janus Rock, Isabel suffers miscarriages, ultimately losing hope of having a child. But when a boat washes ashore carrying a baby, Isabel is certain she’s been blessed with a child after all. Tom wants to contact authorities, especially as a deceased man was also in the boat, but Isabel convinces him not to. Wracked with guilt when he discovers who the mother of the child is, Tom sends word that the baby is being cared for.
I didn’t know who to root for in this story. The situation was so complex, and one I feel I can’t have an opinion on not being a mother. Nonetheless, my heart broke over both mothers’ situations. I did find Isabel insufferable at times, but I say that lightly because again, I have not ever experienced a loss such as hers. This made for an interesting reading experience, though, and I felt engaged.
Likes & Dislikes:
What I liked:
- Beautiful writing and captured a vivid atmosphere.
- Presents a complex plot that maintains a steady pace.
What I didn’t like:
- I wish I had been able to sympathize with Isabel more. There was a point where I almost stepped away from the book because I couldn’t deal with her anymore, but I was ultimately glad I pushed on.
Afterthoughts:
