Review:

Picking up where Encyclopaedia of Faeries ends, Emily Wilde is beginning another project: mapping the faerie realms. Her research, along with the interest of Wendell Bambleby, brings her to map and study the various portals to these realms.

Wendell, banished, seeks his former kingdom. He and Emily, along with Emily’s niece, travel to the Alps. In addition to research and helping Wendell, Emily battles her feelings for Wendell. She is dedicated to her studies, but often thinks of Wendell’s proposal.

I enjoyed this book as much as the first one, if not more. I found it easy to get back into the rhythm of the story and the characters’ personalities. That said, I struggled to keep up with the world building (also as I did in the first book). I’m not a well-versed fantasy reader by any means. Nevertheless, I love the cozy vibe and academic elements of this series. I’m looking forward to seeing what the next book brings.

Likes & Dislikes:

What I liked:

  • The coziness and journal style of writing. I find this engaging.
  • The Alps setting!
  • Sweet moments between Emily and Wendell.

What I didn’t like:

  • I’ve read another series that ended up dealing with other realms and my interest in this portion of the story is 0%.
  • While I am curious to see how book three will play out, I’m a little nervous as to how well my interest hold out if it goes in the direction I think it’s going.

Afterthoughts:

I participated (late) in a buddy read with a few other members of The Global Book Nook!
